Comic style cartoon of a professional Dominatrix holding cleaning supplies while sitting in a dungeon with a speech bubble that has the text 'you think these things sterilise themselves?' and at the lower portion of the image there is text that says 'pro Dom curmudgeon'. Illustrated by artist known as Lee Lai.

Many years ago, a wise pro-Domme gave me the following advice: ‘you need to pretend that everything is covered in shit. EVERYTHING. Not just the toys and furniture you used, but the surfaces - such as the trolley, the doorknobs and EVEN the light switch dimmers – you MUST assume and pretend that all of it is covered in literal shit’.

Despite being a very conscientiously hygienic person, this was honestly the most golden bit of advice given to me in regards to dungeon sanitation as an apprentice Dominatrix. Because it has never left my mind and to this day, echoes through my brain when cleaning after (and during) a session!

As a hair and beauty student, the clean-as-you-go method was stressed to be of the utmost importance due to how much time is saved by doing so, as well as being awarded with surfaces to be able to work on and from, as opposed to being filled with clutter or unsanitary items. Thankfully this method has never left my mind either and serves me very, very well when it comes to BDSM scenes that are messy, fluid filled, or use a lot of various tools.

Strong hygienic practices are the barest of minimums, and are foundational to our health and safety when it comes to sexual play. As a professional Dominatrix, I believe that it is part of my duty of care to take hygiene seriously and never slack on my practices of doing so. Myself, my clients, my peers, my workspaces and the greater community all have the possibility to be effected in a chain-reaction when it comes to sexual health practices; therefore it is utter baseline that I ensure I am doing everything I can in order to mitigate all risks and hazards for everyone involved.

Disposable items such as (but not limited to) gloves, safe sex supplies, paper towel and drop sheets are key to containing contamination. All surfaces, furniture and equipment are cleaned of any contaminants and then sprayed liberally with hospital grade disinfectant after use. This includes leather restraints and furniture.

Metal implements are thoroughly cleaned with 100% isopropyl alcohol and steam sterilised after each booking. Sterile lubricant is always used for medical fetish services such as urethral sounding. Medical sharps containers are used for all needles, scalpels, staples and other sharps. Chlorhexidine is used on the skin as anti-septic and disinfectant where necessary for procedures. All enema types are disposable and are never re-used.

Every insertable toy is covered with a condom prior to use (including in mouth), and is then carefully cleaned with hospital grade anti-bacterial wipes to remove any possible contaminants, and then treated with Viraclean before being stored appropriately as to not collect dust, etc.

Towels, bedding, clothing and ropes are machine washed accordingly with laundry detergents that contain disinfectants, and are fully dried before storage and re-use.

As well as regularly washing my hands with antibacterial soap and hot water, I frequently use 70% alcohol hand sanitizer as required throughout my sessions as I interact with my clients, various items, dispose of used gloves, and as I begin preparation and set-up for each new activity.
